Week 3: The Spy in the Café and Mobile Threats

With the rise of hybrid work culture, our workspaces have moved into homes, cafés and airports. When you are outside the protection of the corporate firewall, you become a much easier target for cyber attackers.

☕ Fake Wi-Fi Networks (Evil Twin)

At a café you visit, you may think you are connecting to the “Free Wi-Fi” network that carries the venue’s name. But a hacker sitting at the next table may have set up their own network with the same name from their phone.

📡 The Risk of Public Networks: When you connect to a malicious network, the passwords you enter in your browser land directly on the attacker’s screen. When accessing corporate systems from outside the office, you should always use your company VPN. A VPN encrypts your data, creating an unbreakable tunnel.

📱 Smishing (SMS Phishing) and Vishing

Fake shipping and bank messages sent to your phone (smishing) are among the most damaging methods in use today.

“Shipping: Your package could not be delivered because you were not at your address. Please pay 9.50 TL so that it can go out for delivery again. Link: http://kargo-odeme-sistemi.com”

When you tap this message and enter your credit card details, your card is cloned within seconds. Official institutions will never ask you for a password or card details through an SMS link.
